Fun with solids23.06.11
It may not look like it from these photos, but I am actually a bit of a neat freak. I have just learnt to relax a little with a baby around – who would have guessed they would be so messy? Ha!
I really want Poppy to have a healthy relationship with food, and since she has been very fond of breastfeeding, it has taken a little while for her to work up to three small meals a day (plus breast milk). At first she only wanted dinner but now she gets cranky if she doesn’t get her foodie fix more often!
One of my Mummy friends told me that babies will be more likely to try new flavours if they get to feel the texture and put their fingers in their mouths to taste themselves. This kind of scared me (the mess!) but when I let Poppy do it she really got into meal times, which made me very excited.
I have had so much fun cooking and mixing up delicious combinations with some proving more popular than others. For example, she absolutely loves:
- sweet potato + couscous
- pear + apple + cinnamon
- blueberry + banana + yoghurt
- cottage cheese + rice cereal
- pumpkin + pear + grated cheddar cheese
- beetroot + carrot when mixed with a fruit puree and yoghurt
However, she hates avocado! I can’t believe it. I thought all babies loved avocado. I have tried to feed it to her twice and she pulled the same sour face. I’m not overly concerned because I heard that you need to feed babies new flavours up to ten times before they start to like it, so I will persevere.
A quick mention must go to my lovely food blogger friend Lorraine (Not Quite Nigella) who bought Poppy that adorable ‘Feed Me’ bib. It is certainly getting a good workout.
If you are new to feeding your baby solids or are about to embark on it then be sure to drop by again tomorrow as I am reviewing a brand new ebook on this very topic. See you then!
